Downtown Historic District

History and Heritage | Downtown

The area from Public Square to Legion St. to Second St. to Franklin St. to Commerce St. showcases beautiful buildings, most of which were constructed shortly after an 1878 fire. The upper levels of many are architecturally noteworthy with heavy ornamentation, cast iron or limestone. Several were damaged in a 1999 tornado and rebuilt to blend beautifully with the preserved facades. Franklin Street and Strawberry Alley have a re-emerged with restaurants and coffee shops, boutiques, and entertainment.
